Sonoma, Scouted

Where to stay, sip, eat & wander.

Few places do fall quite like Sonoma: golden vineyards, crisp mornings, long lunches and a glass of wine that inevitably becomes a few.

It’s polished without feeling fussy, beautiful without trying too hard and made for the kind of weekend when the only real goal is to slow down. Here’s where The Scoutelle would stay, sip, eat and wander during a perfect Sonoma escape.

Stay: MacArthur Place

MacArthur Place is our pick for a stay that feels polished without being precious. Set on a lush historic estate near Sonoma Plaza, the hotel brings together beautiful grounds, a pool, spa and several places to eat and drink—including Layla, The Bar at MacArthur and The Porch.

It’s close enough to town when you want to wander, but lovely enough to make staying put feel like a perfectly good plan.

The Scoutelle take: Leave a little unscheduled time to enjoy the property. This is not simply somewhere to sleep between tastings.

The Perfect Morning

Sunflower Caffé

Begin the day at Sunflower Caffé, located directly on historic Sonoma Plaza. The garden patio is bright, relaxed and exactly where we want to be on a crisp wine-country morning.

Order whatever looks best and most seasonal, add an iced coffee, and resist the urge to schedule your first tasting too early. Sunflower is first-come, first-served, so arrive early on a busy weekend.

After breakfast, take a slow lap around the Plaza before heading into the vineyards.

The Scoutelle order: Whatever is seasonal, plus an iced coffee.

Three stops. Three completely different Sonoma moods.

Three Sticks Wines

Three Sticks welcomes guests inside its beautifully restored 1842 Adobe just off Sonoma Plaza. The setting feels historic, intimate and distinctly Sonoma ideal for anyone who appreciates thoughtful design as much as thoughtful wine.

Best for: History, beautiful interiors and an intimate tasting experience.

The Donum Estate

At Donum, wine, landscape and contemporary art all share the spotlight. The Carneros estate is known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but its monumental outdoor sculpture collection makes the experience completely unlike a traditional winery visit.

Best for: Art lovers and anyone looking for a true destination tasting.

Hamel Estate

Hamel pairs dramatic Sonoma Valley views with striking architecture, underground caves and beautifully curated tasting experiences. Choose the Estate Experience for an introduction or the Chef’s Table for a more immersive wine-and-food pairing.

Best for: Elevated hospitality, architecture and food pairings.

The Scoutelle rule: Reserve ahead and remember that two tastings in one day is plenty. Wine country is much more enjoyable when you leave time to linger.

Lunch: Valley Bar + Bottle

Valley is a neighborhood restaurant, wine bar and bottle shop serving seasonal California cooking just off Sonoma Plaza. It’s stylish but relaxed, with exactly the kind of food you want between tastings.

Come for lunch, order a few things to share and allow it to turn into a longer afternoon than planned.

Dinner: Glen Ellen Star

Drive north to tiny Glen Ellen for dinner at Glen Ellen Star. The restaurant is intimate, ingredient-driven and centered around wood-fired cooking.

It feels special without becoming overly formal—and it is absolutely worth the short drive from Sonoma.

The Scoutelle take: Book both.

Wander the Plaza

Leave a little room in the itinerary and the suitcase for wandering around Sonoma Plaza.

Chateau Sonoma

Chateau Sonoma is filled with French-inspired antiques, collected home pieces, linens, tabletop finds and beautiful objects you didn’t know you needed until you walked inside.

Readers’ Books

Readers’ Books is a small independent bookstore located half a block from the Plaza. Browse the mix of new and used books, cookbooks and staff recommendations before continuing your walk.

The Scoutelle take: Shopping between tastings is not wasted time. It is part of the itinerary.

Friday

Check into MacArthur Place and give yourself time to settle in. Take a sunset walk around Sonoma Plaza, browse a few shops and finish the evening with dinner at Valley Bar + Bottle.

Saturday

Start with breakfast in the garden at Sunflower Caffé. Continue to an intimate tasting at Three Sticks, followed by a long lunch.

Spend the afternoon exploring the wine, art and landscape at The Donum Estate. End the day with a wood-fired dinner at Glen Ellen Star.

Sunday

Enjoy a slow coffee before heading to Hamel Estate for one final tasting. Stop at the Plaza for a last wander, collect anything you regretted leaving behind the day before and then begin the trip home.

The Scoutelle note: The best Sonoma weekends leave room to linger.

The Sonoma Notes

  • Book winery tastings and dinner reservations early.

  • Plan no more than two wineries in one day.

  • Reserve a driver—or choose one before the first pour.

  • Pack layers; wine country cools quickly after sunset.

  • Sonoma Plaza is walkable. The vineyards are not.

  • Bring comfortable shoes and one great jacket.

  • Leave a little breathing room in the itinerary.

The point of Sonoma is not to see everything. It’s to enjoy where you are long enough to remember it.

Consider Your Weekend Scouted

Sonoma has a way of making you slow down in the very best way. Come for the vineyards, stay for the long lunches, beautiful design, intimate restaurants and that golden late-afternoon light.

Save this guide for your next fall escape and be prepared to keep returning.
