The Fall Porch Edit

How to style pumpkins without making your porch look like a pumpkin patch.

There’s a fine line between beautifully layered for fall and the entire garden center came home with you.

Our formula is simple: a collected mix of pumpkins, something with height, a little black, and possibly the most important part … knowing when to stop.

Here’s how we’re styling the fall porch this year.

Mixing the Pumpkins

Skip the rows of identical bright-orange pumpkins and mix colors, shapes and sizes instead. We love classic orange, creamy white, heirloom green and soft peach together. Start with one or two larger pumpkins to anchor the arrangement, then tuck smaller, more unusual shapes around them.

The trick is to cluster, not line up. Think slightly imperfect piles gathered around the steps and planters rather than one pumpkin carefully placed on every stair.

The Scoutelle formula:
Orange + cream + sage + one unexpected heirloom shade.

All about the Height

If your porch feels like it’s missing something, it probably needs height.

A pair of substantial planters instantly gives the whole arrangement structure. Fill them with oversized mums, ornamental grasses, trailing ivy or a mix of all three, then layer pumpkins around the base.

We especially love an old-world stone or concrete-look urn. It adds enough formality to balance all those wonderfully wonky pumpkins.

Why it works: your eye moves from the planters down to the pumpkins instead of seeing one flat row of décor.

Height is what makes a porch look designed rather than decorated.

Something Black…

This is our favorite little fall styling trick.

Add just one or two black elements — lanterns, a velvet ribbon, a planter, the front door itself — and suddenly the whole porch feels a little moodier and more sophisticated.

It’s also the easiest way to take your porch from pretty fall to subtle Halloween without adding a single plastic skeleton.

Our picks:

Black lanterns. Black velvet ribbon. A glossy black planter.

You don’t need all three. One strong black accent is often enough.

The Hardest Step

Yes. This is actually a step.

The temptation with fall decorating is to keep adding: another pumpkin, another mum, another lantern, another wreath…

Resist.

Give each piece a little room and let the architecture of the house still be part of the picture. A handful of thoughtfully chosen pieces almost always looks more expensive than a porch packed with seasonal décor.

The secret is knowing when you have enough.

And if you’re debating whether you need six more pumpkins?

You probably don’t. 😉

The List

01. Faux Heirloom Pumpkins
Look for a mix of orange, cream and muted green in several sizes. The more natural the shape and finish, the better.

02. Black Lanterns
A pair or trio in varying heights makes even the simplest porch feel instantly finished.

03. Magnolia Wreath
We prefer magnolia or dried-looking leaves over anything overly orange. Add a long black velvet ribbon for a subtle Halloween moment.

04. Black-Border Coir Mat
Simple. Classic. No seasonal saying required.

05. Stone Garden Urn
Fill it with rust, cream or burgundy mums and reuse the planter well beyond fall.

06. Glass Hurricane Candles
Group a few together and use flameless outdoor candles for that warm evening glow without babysitting an open flame.

The Final Formula

Mixed pumpkins + height + a touch of black + restraint.

That’s it.

No giant haul required. No theme necessary. Just a few really good pieces styled well.

Consider it scouted.
